Auto-dimming rear-view mirrors are amazing in the way they work. For those of you that are interested in the workings of this device, it is good to know what the mirrors are made of. There are actually quite a few parts to the auto-dimming rear-view mirrors.
For the auto-dimming rear-view mirrors, you have two sensors, which are either photodetectors or cameras, two layers of glass, and the electrochromic gel which is held in between the two layers of glass. There is also the microprocessor which sends the charge that dims the mirrors.
This process automatically works when there is a bright light from the vehicle coming from behind. The sensors detect the light and the microprocessor sends a charge to the gel which will darken up. This will result in a dimmer image in the mirror which will keep the light from blinding you so you can continue to drive safely.
