Fear not, it's easy to make those salt stains vanish using a little chemistry knowledge.
Salt dissolves in water. That means it alone would be easy to remove from a carpet. What really gets you are the additives used to keep the road salt from clumping.
These additives, CaCO3 and MgCO3, are non-water soluble bases.
Spray a 50-50 solution of hot water and vinegar on the stained carpet, and the acidic vinegar will neutralize the basic salt additives, and turn them into something that can be absorbed in water.
Then it's just a matter of blotting everything up, and letting the clean carpets dry overnight.
